Apple Watch Ultra starts at US$799. For the price, you get a smartwatch that is designed for and can, supposedly, survive the harsh outdoors. Tech reviewer TechRax decided to test whether it is actually so and put the Watch Ultra through a series of brutal durability tests, including hammering Apple’s premier smartwatch to death.

Apple announced the Watch Ultra alongside the Watch Series 8 and the new Watch SE on September 7. The device is aimed at thrill seekers like hikers, endurance runners, and scuba divers. Because the Watch Ultra is designed for demanding activities, the frame of the smartwatch is made from Titanium while a Sapphire crystal cover protects the display. Tech YouTuber TechRax has put the Watch Ultra to the test to see how well it holds up and whether or not the premium construction materials make any difference.

First up, the reviewer dropped the Apple Watch Ultra face-first on concrete from a height of 4 ft. While the Titanium frame suffered some scratches and scuffs, the display showed no exterior damage. Similarly, the Watch Ultra also came out unscathed with no visible marks on the body and the display after a violent shaking session inside a jar of nails. The reviewer used this odd test to simulate how well the Watch Ultra would resist scratches in a rugged landscape.

Finally, the Apple Watch Ultra managed to withstand quite a bit of hammer strikes before the display stopped working. Even after the screen gave out, the Sapphire crystal cover remained intact and took some more blows before the front completely shattered.

Suffice to say, Apple’s claim that the Watch Ultra is “the most rugged Apple Watch ever” appears to be true.
